LinkedIn Faces Legal Action Over Alleged Data Sharing for AI Development 

LinkedIn, the social media platform owned by Microsoft, is facing a class-action lawsuit over claims that it shared user data to train AI models improperly. The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in San Jose, California, alleging that the platform used private user information without proper consent. Linkedin’s premium subscribers argue that this is a violation of privacy rights and is in breach of the company’s obligations 

The controversy revolves around a policy update from August 2024 that allowed users to decline private data sharing. A policy update in September clarified that despite that, LinkedIn would still use the previously collected private data to train AI models. 

Legal Claims and Demands

Users accuse LinkedIn of violating California’s Unfair Competition Law and the federal Stored Communications Act. They are seeking compensation for damages for breach of contract, asking $1,000 per user under the Stored Communications Act.

LinkedIn responded to these allegations, calling them baseless, and claimed that it remains committed to its practices centered around user privacy and transparency.
